Dr Geoff Lovell

Dr Geoff Lovell CPsychol graduated from St. Mary’s College in 1991 before taking a psychophysiology research scholar position at the Manchester Metropolitan University where he gained his sports psychology PhD in 1998. After leaving Manchester he combined applied practice with academic positions first at Roehampton University London, then at Kingston University as the Principle Lecturer and Course Director for Sports Science, then at Bond University, Australia, as an Associate Professor.

Currently he is the Course Leader for the University of Gloucestershire’s Masters degree in Applied Sport and Exercise Sciences. Dr. Lovell has over fifteen years experience of sports psychology with both elite and recreational performers, is chartered as a psychologist by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and has been accredited for a scientific support and research by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) since 1996. Although he has worked with numerous sports, he has also been the team psychologist for several Lottery funded national teams, including disabled weightlifting, sprint kayaking and target shooting.

Though his specialist area spans the breadth of sports psychology, particular areas of interest include injury management and rehabilitation, as well as under-performance syndrome in athletes. Working from a biopsychosocial model of health, psychological support has been shown to provide a very positive adjunct to medical intervention. Sport psychology can be very effective in helping athletes cope with the trauma of injuries and adhere to the rehabilitation process, accelerating their return to full training and competition. Furthermore, psychological interventions can be very important for athletes to regain their confidence following surgery, thus facilitating the realisation of their full performance potential and, particularly importantly, decreasing their risk of re-injury.

In addition his applied psychology consultancy and lecturing to both undergraduate and postgraduates, Dr Lovell continues to research - presenting at international conferences, publishing peer reviewed scientific journal articles and book chapters - as well as supervising students for higher degrees by research.
